Speaker:

Today.

Speaker:

I want to talk about something that has been, look, I think has

Speaker:

been a challenge for me for much of my life as a person of faith.

Speaker:

I'm often like, you know, You end up with this old list ID.

Speaker:

Do you end up with this kind of magical fairy idea?

Speaker:

That life is supposed to just go exactly how you want it.

Speaker:

This should be sunshine and rainbows and unicorns sprinkling your favorite

Speaker:

hand-selected color-coded M and M's along your path as you journey through the day.

Speaker:

And I've sort of thought for a long time that if.

Speaker:

If it wasn't like that, then it must be something wrong.

Speaker:

And I was doing something wrong.

Speaker:

And then depending on how you grew up in.

Speaker:

All sorts of different experiences that we have in life of trauma and

Speaker:

pain, all that stuff that happens.

Speaker:

We can tend to think that life isn't going exactly the way we want.

Speaker:

Then maybe we are being punished.

Speaker:

You ever had that thought?

Speaker:

I know some of you haven't I talked to Karen about this once and she's

Speaker:

like, no, I've never thought that I'm like, okay, so everyone except

Speaker:

Karen, who I'm talking to you today.

Speaker:

I'm sure most of us have had some kind of similar experience.

Speaker:

That'd be a spectrum.

Speaker:

Me, as some of us would be like, you know, going through life, feeling

Speaker:

that you're deeply kind of cursed or punished nothing ever works for you.

Speaker:

And nothing goes right.

Speaker:

All the way to kind of not having that feeling, but sort of when things do

Speaker:

go wrong and you get frustrated and you're like, am I doing something wrong?

Speaker:

Why isn't God, the universe making things work for me?

Speaker:

So I got a really interesting filter on this today.

Speaker:

I was up super early and.

Speaker:

Uh, lately I've been spending from about 4:00 AM through the kind of 7:00 AM.

Speaker:

I'm doing a lot of training content, just listening, some really good

Speaker:

training that I like to listen to.

Speaker:

And just, you know, resourcing myself.

Speaker:

And I, you know, I've said to you guys for so many years, keep filling

Speaker:

that cup, keep resourcing yourself.

Speaker:

With great content.

Speaker:

So the filter they want to use on this topic of you.

Speaker:

Is the universe conspiring against you?

Speaker:

He's to kind of talk about the pair of questions, right?

Speaker:

The power of questions I learned many years ago, that if you ask

Speaker:

your brain a dumb question, It will give you a very unhelpful answer.

Speaker:

If you have asked your brain a question, like, why am I so stupid?

Speaker:

Or why can I never get anything?

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

Well, your brain is going to give you a spectacularly.

Speaker:

Um, helpful answer.

Speaker:

Trust me.

Speaker:

That's exactly.

Speaker:

What's going to happen.

Speaker:

You ask a better question.

Speaker:

You get a better result.

Speaker:

If you ask a question of.

Speaker:

You know, instead of why am I so stupid?

Speaker:

You asked when you might ask a question?

Speaker:

Like what could I attempt differently?

Speaker:

What am I doing?

Speaker:

That's inefficient.

Speaker:

That just same experience, but different questions.

Speaker:

Do you ask a better question?

Speaker:

You get a better state, you get a much better sense of direction and movement

Speaker:

and purpose in the difficulties of life.

Speaker:

So let's take this concept of is God punishing me.

Speaker:

Is the universe punishing me?

Speaker:

Did I step on someone's cat?

Speaker:

Did I break 15 mirrors and did 300 kept black cats running cross in front of me.

Speaker:

And I'm never going to get what I want to.

Speaker:

What about moving from.

Speaker:

Is God punishing me or is the universe punishing me to something

Speaker:

like, is God challenging me?

Speaker:

Is God challenging me.

Speaker:

Am I being challenged to grow by these difficult circumstances?

Speaker:

You see, as a parent, you know, several young kids, my son, who's 39 and a half.

Speaker:

Like he's really eating that phase of, you know, beginning to grow

Speaker:

into these young men hood and.

Speaker:

And moving from that dependence to kind of independence and interdependence.

Speaker:

And I noticed that as a parent, my task is to start to push them a little bit harder.

Speaker:

To try and get him to take more responsibility, to have

Speaker:

more accountability, to set his own standards higher.

Speaker:

And I can see that as a parent, I'm expecting a higher standard.

Speaker:

And I don't think as you know, many of you parents know often your

Speaker:

kids are not like, Hey, thanks.

Speaker:

I really appreciate you making life more challenging for me.

Speaker:

We've got the kids.

Speaker:

Don't tend to be grateful, at least not initially.

Speaker:

So what have we take that lens?

Speaker:

Take that filter and say, what if.

Speaker:

Life God, the universe.

Speaker:

Is challenging.

Speaker:

You.

Speaker:

What of your difficult situation is one that's not just going to destroy

Speaker:

you, but actually make you grow now.

Speaker:

Please understand this is not pleasant.

Speaker:

A lot of the time, this can be really quite difficult and painful.

Speaker:

I'm still learning that as I go, sometimes I find things really difficult.

Speaker:

Like, wow, why is it like this?

Speaker:

And then I remind myself, Hey man, what you just said to everybody?

Speaker:

I mean, what you're talking about on your podcast.

Speaker:

It's because of its hard, you growing.

Speaker:

If it's difficult, you growing.

Speaker:

So friends, I really want to give you that filter, you know, and sometimes

Speaker:

if things aren't going the right the way we want, it's not because we're

Speaker:

being challenged or being punished.

Speaker:

It's because we're being lazy.

Speaker:

Maybe we're not doing enough.

Speaker:

Maybe we're actually sitting on the metaphorical couch of life and not doing

Speaker:

the things that we need to be doing.

Speaker:

So I want to give myself that lens, that I, what if all of the difficulties,

Speaker:

what of all the challenges and pains and things that we wish were different?

Speaker:

We're invitations to growth.

Speaker:

We're chances to change things.

Speaker:

We're chances to get stronger and stronger and stronger.

Speaker:

I just got out of the gym this morning, got out of the gym, got here into the

Speaker:

studio and I'm like, I'm in the gym.

Speaker:

I'm doing deadlifts today.

Speaker:

And I'm doing high reps for a change.

Speaker:

And I'm like the painful set.

Speaker:

One was painful.

Speaker:

Set.

Speaker:

Two was painful.

Speaker:

Step three was painful, but now.

Speaker:

I have a body like a great God, at least that's how I describe it.

Speaker:

I mean, It's not quite, you know, Michelangelo's David,

Speaker:

but it's not too far off.

Speaker:

But my point is it's that resistance.

Speaker:

It's that difficulty, it's that pain.

Speaker:

It's that hardship that changes us.

Speaker:

It causes us to grow.

Speaker:

So look into your life today, my friend, look into your life

Speaker:

and ask yourself the question.

Speaker:

Are you being punished or are you being challenged?

Speaker:

Where is the most difficult things in your life today, because that

Speaker:

is the place you are going to grow.

Speaker:
