Speaker:

Well, Hey everybody, Jonathan Doyle with you.

Speaker:

Once again, welcome aboard to the daily podcast.

Speaker:

So good to have the pleasure of your company.

Speaker:

Hope I can bring you something useful today.

Speaker:

It is.

Speaker:

A fraction under minus seven degrees Celsius, uh, outside the studio.

Speaker:

It is 4:30 AM.

Speaker:

And I'm going for a training ride at 5:30 AM in minus seven.

Speaker:

I think.

Speaker:

I've always been able to do it, but I'm just like this time I'm like, Come on.

Speaker:

We should just break anyway.

Speaker:

I'm going to do it.

Speaker:

And.

Speaker:

I just want to encourage you that, uh, Our minds are capable of getting

Speaker:

our bodies to do remarkable things.

Speaker:

If the, um, If we have enough motivation, enough reasons, we have enough scaffolding

Speaker:

underneath what we're trying to do.

Speaker:

So, whatever you're facing today, I hope it doesn't

Speaker:

involve a minus seven bike ride.

Speaker:

In the dark.

Speaker:

All right.

Speaker:

Let's press on.

Speaker:

I've got a really cool quote that I want to share with you today.

Speaker:

As I shared in the last couple episodes, I've just been finishing

Speaker:

Jordan Peterson's new book.

Speaker:

I mean, enjoying that.

Speaker:

I, you know, if I had a time machine.

Speaker:

I would use it to pause time and get through my backlog of books.

Speaker:

I know I've got some listeners that read a lot, some that, uh, don't

Speaker:

read so much, but I just, I'm a book guy and they are just piling up.

Speaker:

It's very exciting.

Speaker:

So, I mean, enjoying Jordan Peterson's book and I read, uh, something

Speaker:

yesterday was quite poignant and I thought it's useful for all of us.

Speaker:

And it was simply this quote here.

Speaker:

He said,

Speaker:

I'll give you the context he was talking about.

Speaker:

The speaking tours.

Speaker:

I think he did 160 venues.

Speaker:

You know, on a north American tour and, uh, parts of Europe

Speaker:

and then into Australia.

Speaker:

And of course, if you're familiar with his work, you know, he spends

Speaker:

a fair bit of time doing Q and a and talking to the audience.

Speaker:

And, uh, he was talking about.

Speaker:

Just the striking experience of hearing how difficult people's lives can be

Speaker:

and how much is going on for people.

Speaker:

So here's the quote he says, I find it heart-wrenching to see how

Speaker:

little encouragement and guidance.

Speaker:

So many people have received.

Speaker:

And how much good can emerge when a little more is provided.

Speaker:

I find it heart-wrenching to see how little encouragement and guidance

Speaker:

so many people have received.

Speaker:

And how much good can emerge when a little more is provided.

Speaker:

You know, there's an old saying about communication.

Speaker:

Uh, that I memorized many years ago, which was simply this, the

Speaker:

great myth about communication.

Speaker:

Is that it actually took place.

Speaker:

So sometimes we think we're communicating with somebody, but we really haven't been.

Speaker:

And sort of this quotes kind of similar.

Speaker:

I think, we assume we can easily assume that.

Speaker:

Everybody's just trotting along through life and, you know, Sometimes

Speaker:

we're aware that people are having difficulties, but a lot of the

Speaker:

time, we're not a lot of the time.

Speaker:

We might even have friends or we meet people.

Speaker:

And our assumption is that, you know, they seem normal enough

Speaker:

and everything's ticking along.

Speaker:

But what we often don't realize is.

Speaker:

The real difficulties and hardships that people have often lived through or could

Speaker:

be experiencing in the current time.

Speaker:

And I think that's why this is quite useful because it reminds us that so many

Speaker:

people, so many of the people around us.

Speaker:

Have often received very little, either historical encouragement

Speaker:

or recent encouragement.

Speaker:

And how many people have often not received a lot of

Speaker:

good guidance in their life.

Speaker:

And I remember someone telling me that when COVID really kicked up,

Speaker:

they said, ah, They were trying to find a psychologist to talk to cause

Speaker:

they were going through a difficult time and they couldn't get access.

Speaker:

They just, every psychologist was like booked out zoom calls, you

Speaker:

know, just in impossible months, sometimes six months to 12 months.

Speaker:

Wait.

Speaker:

So that kind of resonated for me in the idea that, you know, There was

Speaker:

tons of people out there seeking help and guidance and assistance.

Speaker:

And a lot of people say, that's why people like Jordan Peterson have been

Speaker:

so successful because there's just this great big need in the world for so

Speaker:

many of us to have someone around us.

Speaker:

Giving us ideas, giving us encouragement, giving us insight.

Speaker:

So let's put this together for what I think it's relevant for us.

Speaker:

I think there's a good chance in the next 24 hours that you're going

Speaker:

to be around somebody who probably needs some encouragement and somebody

Speaker:

who may even need some guidance.

Speaker:

In such a distracted culture with so much coming at people all the time.

Speaker:

I just, you know, There's a lack of sometimes attention, like, uh, giving

Speaker:

people your attention, giving our attention to people, listening carefully.

Speaker:

Allowing enough time.

Speaker:

I mean, we're all in such a rush army.

Speaker:

I noticed with my kids, I need to kind of consciously, like we had

Speaker:

this beautiful moment last night.

Speaker:

Where Karen was out with my son, Aiden and, uh, And my girls who

Speaker:

are both still really young.

Speaker:

You know, No, I was in the, in the lounge room.

Speaker:

And my daughter, one of my daughters was sitting there reading and I came

Speaker:

out and sat there and then another one, my other daughter came out and sat.

Speaker:

And I guess what I noticed was that they just kind of sat around me

Speaker:

and we had this kind of moment, no television, no tech, just sitting around.

Speaker:

Being with each other and this need for.

Speaker:

I guess attention and presence and being with people.

Speaker:

Is a really significant thing.

Speaker:

So.

Speaker:

You can't know, in the next 24 hours who around you could need some

Speaker:

encouragement and how easy is it to do it?

Speaker:

You know, just to give someone a tiny bit of encouragement, just to be able to

Speaker:

say, Hey, you did really well with that.

Speaker:

That was a great job.

Speaker:

Or, you know, you look really nice and these days it's so hard, isn't it to give

Speaker:

someone a positive, physical compliment.

Speaker:

You know, you're afraid you'll get arrested.

Speaker:

If you say to someone, Hey, you look great.

Speaker:

I love what you've done with your hair.

Speaker:

People like, what's wrong with you?

Speaker:

What are you doing?

Speaker:

What are you creepy?

Speaker:

It's like, no, I'm just actually saying that you look really nice.

Speaker:

You know, um, so giving someone encouragement in the right context,

Speaker:

Appropriately can be such a powerful thing.

Speaker:

And of course, remember that encouragement.

Speaker:

In the word encouragement.

Speaker:

It literally means the translation.

Speaker:

So cool.

Speaker:

Co you are, comes from the sort of older medieval French quarter, which is hot.

Speaker:

So encouragement means to put heart into someone.

Speaker:

I don't know if you knew that, but that's what it means to, to encourage

Speaker:

is to put heart back in someone who may have lost heart on the journey of life.

Speaker:

So you can't, you just can't know, you can't know the impact you can

Speaker:

have just from giving a little bit of encouragement and guidance to someone.

Speaker:

So be on the lookout for that.

Speaker:

And maybe you need it yourself.

Speaker:

Maybe it's time to ask for a little bit.

Speaker:

Maybe it's time to.

Speaker:

You know, reach out to somebody and tell them that you'd love

Speaker:

some time with them just to sit and to discuss stuff, you know?

Speaker:

So many people just need someone to listen to them.

Speaker:

Just to actually listen to them.

Speaker:

All right.

Speaker:

That's it.

Speaker:

So get out there, give some encouragement, give some guidance, look around

Speaker:

you for people that need a bit of a pickup and be that person for them.

Speaker:

All right.
