Have you ever found yourself procrastinating in life because you’ve waited for some kind of sign or confirmation that never came? There are times when we can avoid taking the necessary action because we think we need some kind of cosmic message that tells us when to move forward. In today’s message I want to talk with you about the need to just take action and keep moving ahead even when you’re not sure.

Speaker:

You ready to jump in today?

Speaker:

We're going to talk.

Speaker:

About something.

Speaker:

That's uh, has been a challenge for me at different times in life.

Speaker:

Want to talk about.

Speaker:

Why we need to stop looking for.

Speaker:

A sign.

Speaker:

And if that sounds esoteric to you hanging there, I'm going to make this relevant.

Speaker:

I've been really reading a really interesting book lately and yesterday.

Speaker:

They, there was this simple moment where it talked about the

Speaker:

need to stop looking for a sign.

Speaker:

And it referenced a name.

Speaker:

If you've ever seen the movie Forrest Gump with Tom Hanks, but there's a

Speaker:

scene where this sort of feather.

Speaker:

Floats down and lands in his lap and it sits him off on this whole process.

Speaker:

And.

Speaker:

The book was sort of saying, we need to stop waiting for feathers to fall into

Speaker:

our lap, which is what do they mean?

Speaker:

They mean this.

Speaker:

That sometimes we don't take action.

Speaker:

We don't move forward because we are waiting for some kind of cosmic

Speaker:

sign, some kind of confirmation.

Speaker:

That the direction we are heading in is the right one.

Speaker:

I would like to nominate myself as the undisputed champion of such things.

Speaker:

I have struggled with this at different times in life, wanting.

Speaker:

A deep desire.

Speaker:

To not just do what I think is the right thing, but to not want to waste energy

Speaker:

and time, I've always wanted to go on.

Speaker:

I'm going to commit to X, but I need to know, I need a deep internal sense

Speaker:

that this is 150% the right thing to do.

Speaker:

And that if I go and do this, there's going to be a guaranteed result.

Speaker:

And I think a lot of times I've got myself in all levels of confusion.

Speaker:

Uh, somebody decided to me, I've always, I always need to be careful

Speaker:

of the issue of paralysis by analysis.

Speaker:

But I get paralyzed by analyzing things too much.

Speaker:

So.

Speaker:

Do you ever do this?

Speaker:

Do you ever sort of go, well, I'm going to do this action.

Speaker:

If X happens.

Speaker:

Teaching algebra to my daughter at the moment.

Speaker:

And there's this, you know, if X equals this, then why?

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

It's like we can get really stuck.

Speaker:

Because we're not sure how to move forward.

Speaker:

So what I'm going to actually suggest is that the way to move forward is this.

Speaker:

Move forward.

Speaker:

The way to move forward is simply to take action and take the next viable

Speaker:

logical step that's in front of you.

Speaker:

This seems to be something about action.

Speaker:

That's remarkable.

Speaker:

I'm going to do a full podcast on the concept of action in a couple of days.

Speaker:

So stay tuned for that.

Speaker:

I want to go deeper into it.

Speaker:

But as I get older in life, I realized that we don't see the full picture.

Speaker:

We don't have a guaranteed insight into exactly the right thing to do all

Speaker:

the time everywhere on every occasion.

Speaker:

We can't know.

Speaker:

We have to develop, uh, intellects.

Speaker:

We have to read, you have to become knowledgeable.

Speaker:

We have to develop our spiritual core.

Speaker:

We have to try and look after our health and wellbeing so that we're we're as

Speaker:

often as possible in optimal states.

Speaker:

Give you an example?

Speaker:

Uh, I don't know if you are familiar with one of the greatest

Speaker:

inventions in human history.

Speaker:

No, it is not the printing press.

Speaker:

It is not penicillin.

Speaker:

It's not electricity.

Speaker:

It's cookie cream, commotion, ice cream.

Speaker:

Cookie cream commotion ice cream is probably the greatest

Speaker:

creation in human history.

Speaker:

The reason I'm sharing this story with you is because there have been

Speaker:

times, years ago, I haven't done this.

Speaker:

Many many years.

Speaker:

Well, I would eat a tub of cookie cream commotion.

Speaker:

I was a bit younger.

Speaker:

I was super active.

Speaker:

I mean, I'm still super active, but I kind of reasoned to myself.

Speaker:

Hey, I can eat.

Speaker:

Top a cookie cream commotion.

Speaker:

No problem.

Speaker:

But every time I did it, it wasn't that often.

Speaker:

Yeah, don't judge me.

Speaker:

It wasn't that often.

Speaker:

But there would be this time and I would, uh, I would eat that tub.

Speaker:

And then you go into cookie cream, commotion coma.

Speaker:

You're lying there and you're like, Uh, he's like fully.

Speaker:

Bonnie gumball Homer Simpson.

Speaker:

You don't move him.

Speaker:

What's my point is that.

Speaker:

To make good decisions.

Speaker:

We've got to try and be an optimal states.

Speaker:

So rather than waiting for.

Speaker:

You know the universe to send us a feather.

Speaker:

We need to try and get ourselves consistently in good states of life so

Speaker:

that we can make reasonable decisions.

Speaker:

And I guess what I'm trying to say here is that.

Speaker:

If we feel terrible, if we're not looking after ourselves, then good decision-making

Speaker:

can become more problematic.

Speaker:

But back to the focus of today's message.

Speaker:

I really just want to remind us and remind myself.

Speaker:

To have the humility to know that there are things we cannot know.

Speaker:

To have the humility to know that we sometimes just have to

Speaker:

move forward and keep going.

Speaker:

So now as a parent, my kids are at that age where they making more and more

Speaker:

decisions United coming into their teens.

Speaker:

And there's more and more things going on.

Speaker:

More decisions to be made about friendships and time and

Speaker:

what they do with their time.

Speaker:

And.

Speaker:

And their aspirations and goals and the self-development all

Speaker:

these awesome things that are a great privilege to do as a parent.

Speaker:

It's this awareness that, you know, They're not going to know the full path.

Speaker:

I'm not going to know the full path.

Speaker:

What they need to do is make the next decision, make the next choice.

Speaker:

So friends, I think I've probably wasted.

Speaker:

Important seasons of life.

Speaker:

I haven't.

Speaker:

Fully executed at times because I've been waiting for some kind of internal clarity.

Speaker:

That didn't come or couldn't come.

Speaker:

Because I just needed to get on with the business of living

Speaker:

and just doing life itself.

Speaker:

So I hope this is not too esoteric and a bit too confusing.

Speaker:

I guess what I'm saying is.

Speaker:

You get this one precious life.

Speaker:

And I'm not encouraging you to be frivolous.

Speaker:

I'm not encouraging you to be flippant about making poor decisions.

Speaker:

I'm just saying.

Speaker:

Sometimes you just have to move forward.

Speaker:

You just got to do the next thing in front of you, whatever it is.

Speaker:

And then the path opens.

Speaker:

You know, I've been up since.

Speaker:

At three 50 this morning and, uh, You know, I was lying there at some

Speaker:

ridiculous hour and I was thinking about.

Speaker:

Many many years ago.

Speaker:

When I was about 18.

Speaker:

I applied to a gap here.

Speaker:

Uh, a year overseas in England and I researched these 36

Speaker:

amazing schools where I could go.

Speaker:

And I got 35 rejections.

Speaker:

But I got accepted by the best of them all.

Speaker:

And it was the most phenomenal experience and it changed my life.

Speaker:

And I guess what I'm saying is that I just had to take action.

Speaker:

You know, if I'd sat around and said, you know, God universe magical

Speaker:

feathers, please send to me a message about what I should do and

Speaker:

which school I should apply to.

Speaker:

I just took action.

Speaker:

I applied to 36.

Speaker:

So maybe that's helpful for some of you today that you're stuck on a

Speaker:

decision you're, you're waiting for some kind of cosmic clarification.

Speaker:

Look, do the practical stuff.

Speaker:

Talk to the people that love you.

Speaker:

Talk to the people that know you.

Speaker:

Well, I've got a bunch of outside mentors that I can go to at any time.

Speaker:

So do all that stuff.

Speaker:

But then after that, just move forward because you can't.

Speaker:

No, until you take action, you can't know.

Speaker:

See, and you can always undo action.

Speaker:

Right?

Speaker:

You can always start something and go, this is the worst decision I've ever made.

Speaker:

And you're out of there.

Speaker:

You can change things.

Speaker:

You've got some flexibility.

Speaker:

So should I be afraid to act, take that action?

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

Stay tuned tomorrow.

Speaker:

We're going to be talking about something different.

Speaker:

We may be talking about duty.

Speaker:

I know you thinking, what would we talk about that it's really important.

Speaker:
